Reading Fluency

So what is reading fluency?

Reading fluency encompasses the speed or rate of reading, as well as the ability to read materials with expression. Meyer and Felton defined fluency as "'the ability to read connected text rapidly, smoothly, effortlessly, and automatically with little conscious attention to the mechanics of reading, such as decoding" (1999, p. 284).

The faster on can read the more one can comprehend.  Therefore, if a child can decode their words without any concerns but just read slow and choppy, this is the area we need to focus on.

What do you do next?

Come in and we will evaluate your child to determine what rate they are reading and we will determine if they are reading in a smooth and appropriate manner for their grade level.

Our classes are one to two days a week for one hour.

Why is reading fluency so important?

1.  Many times your child is going to have to read out loud in the classroom.  You want them to be able to read well and clear and not be embarrassed.

2. The faster one reads the more they comprehend.

3. ISAT scores can improve the faster one can read.

4. ACT students need to be reading 180 words per minute or more to do well on this test.

So do not hesitate call today and let us help your child with their reading fluency.
